  • Munda Baptist Church, Munda Baptist Church wrote 10 years ago:
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Greetings from Munda Baptist Church in Sambalpur, Odisha. I am writing to all of you as the mission compound in Sambalpur has been sold off by Bishop Pinuel Dip, Mr. Bijay Pattnayak, and Mr. Franklin John Qureshi , of BMS New Delhi, fraudulently. We understand that there are some misconceptions spread by the previous CNI Bishop, C.K. Das, and current Bishop, Pinuel Dip, to justify the sale of the property. I am writing this letter so that we can start a communication process as brothers and sisters in Christ and stop corrupt officials from the diocese and BMS from profiting by selling off properties. It has been our intention to preserve the property for the future generations of Christians in our area. We decided to build our church at the property as A.J.C. Chhatria leased out the mission compound to a taxi stand. The drivers not only fought with each other after getting drunk in the evenings, they also started doing puja at the mission compound. Christians from Munda community donated money and time to build the church building. Neither BMS nor CNI contributed for the church building. In 1965, the Dhuchura Pada Church in Sambalpur was verbally given 0.37 acres land by the Baptist Union at the nission compound. During that time, we felt it was too far to build a church at the compound and did not built the facility. In 1970, after the CNI was formed, our then elders were manipulated to join the CNI saying they would get better salaries and retirement if they joined CNI. As a result, the mission compound owned by Baptist Union came under the stewardship of CNI. We left CNI in 1980 as the promises made did not materialize. In early 2010 we heard that Bishop Dip was getting ready to sell the mission compound. We wrote to the Sub-Registrar of Sambalpur on September 4, 2010 requesting not to allow the sale of the property. However the property was sold off and registration documents were prepared in Hotel Royale Midtown in Bhubaneswar on September 10, 2010 at 8:30PM and 4.28 acres of prime land was sold off for Rs. 2,24,06 000. The current market value of the property is close to Rs. 100,00,00,000. By selling the property, the officers of the CNI and Mr. Franklin Qureshi, ex-General secretary of BMS, have also denied the opportunity for many poor children from getting a proper education as the property has maintained hostels for poor children for over sixty years. It has also come to our attention that Mr. Qureshi was fired from his job at BMS recently on corruption charges. There are several court cases going on in Punjab and Haryana against him for fraudulently selling off mission properties. At the time he signed the documents to sell the property in Sambalpur he was on bail from Ambala city court. The property that was given to Dhuchra Pada Church was sold off by Mr. Vijaya Pattnayak with Mr. Qureshi and Bishop Dip’s approval even though he does not have authority to sell the property. The purchaser tried to have some militants come in to set up a temple at the mission compound. However we have been able to keep them at bay. By selling the property at less than its actual value some people have personally gained. The following are the people who have financially gained from the sale: 1. Franklin John Qureshi, ex-General Secretary, BMS 2. Rev. Pinuel Dip, Bishop, Sambalpur Diocese, Bolangir 3. Jayanta Kumar Pattnayak 4. Vijay Kumar Pattnayak 5. Prasenjit Kumar Chhatria Many government officials also have gained from this sale and as a result we have not been able to get fair dealings from government officials. We have all the documents that prove that the property was sold fraudulently, and if you wish, we can supply those to you. We are also willing to meet with you all at a mutually agreed location. I hope this letter will help enhance mutual co-operation between our Church and CNI and will help put a stop to corruption in our churches. With brotherly love, Daharu Barla Secretary Sambalpur District Churches Union Sambalpur, Odisha, India.
